For many people, Netflix is a regular source of entertainment nowadays, as there really isn’t very many interesting shows on tv channels anymore! Netflix has been bringing in more and more international titles with English subtitles (yay!) and recently Atelier, a Japanese drama series about lingerie showed up on one of the lists! Boy oh boy!!
“Atelier”, also called “Underwear” takes you through the journey of Mayuko Tokita, a textile major (and fanatic) who lands a job at the reputable and longstanding custom made lingerie shop, Emotion. There she learns about running a lingerie shop and the design and creation process, under the leadership of owner and designer Mayumi Nanjo.
If you have never watched any Japanese or also similar Korean drama series before, some two cents before digging into Atelier:
Be prepared for over exaggerated acting and excitement…it is drama after all!
Often times you want to strangle the main female or male lead for making the decisions they make, or saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Expect sappy moments, if you get emotional and cry easily, have a box of tissues near by. There will always be sap!
Personally I really enjoyed the series at 13 episodes – but it did leave me wanting more, which means it was good enough to grab my interest! I actually ended up binge watching…hah! There were some contradicting details, here and there, but all in all very delightful! It’s slightly got a little bit of Devil Wears Prada setup, so if you enjoyed that film, you will like Atelier too..or at least I did. Definitely worth a watch if you love lingerie or are interested in seeing a little bit of the process like design sketching, pattern drafting, creating a theme, trunk shows, runway shows, and dealing with fashion magazines. (All simplified of course for television sake!)
